DIY Tutorial: “Girl on Fire” Backdrop + Giant Mockingjay Pins {Hunger Games Party}

the hunger games movie inspired mockingjay pin diy tutorial with gold spray paint

For those of you that are fans of The Hunger Games, the inspiration behind this DIY table backdrop (or home photo booth backdrop) should be obvious at a glance! One thing that might not be so obvious, though – is how wonderfully affordable this was to create… which means adding lots of creative “fire” to your Hunger Games Party without burning through your entire budget!

Standard crepe paper streamers and sparkly red tulle were used to represent Katniss’s “Girl on Fire” persona, while spray painted embroidery hoops ($1 to $1.50 depending on size and paper mockingjay silhouettes brought the giant “Mockingjay Pins” to life. Wooden dowels and feathers were used to create the arrows. Scroll down for more step by step info + links to download the large and small mockingjay silhouettes! (more…)

pb teen giveaway

Winner update: 8/16/12: This giveaway is now closed. Thanks so much to everyone that entered! And the lucky random winner is… Commenters #25 – CAROLYN HORTEN Congrats!

{HWTM contributor Tonya Coleman here from Soireé Event Design.} One question I get the asked all the time is: “My teen wants a party… What do I do? Help me please!” As a mom of a 16 year old, I know that planning a teen event is hard.  Let’s just say – you must AMP UP the cool factor!

I teamed up with PBteen to show you how to take items from your teen’s room and use them in your party design to throw a fabulous teen party. {Be sure to go to the end of the post for details on a cool PBteen GIVEAWAY!} When I begin to design a teen party for my clients, I always ask to see the teen’s room. You can get an idea of what style they like, what colors they love and what things they’re into to get you started on the party’s look and feel. I’ll walk you through a music theme that is one of my most popular themes & give you 5 tips for creating the look….

Here I designed the entire party around music by pulling in several instruments and using them in unexpected ways. Make sure your teen creates a playlist of all of their favorite songs ahead of time and have them playing during the party. (You can also have the playlist burned on cds to give away as party favors.)

DIY Tutorial: Easy & Whimsical Paper Flowers

whimsical paper flowers centerpiece - DIY tutorial

If you caught my Pier 1 event recap posted yesterday, you probably noticed that we used TONS of paper flowers throughout the decor – especially this lovely whimsical version! We did an in-person demo of these flowers at the event, and I’m excited to share the tutorial with you today too – because I think you’re going to love how easy it is to whip them out!

easy and whimsical paper flowers tutorial

I found the instructions for this style of flower by Jeffery Rudell right here, and it’s definitely helpful to check out the visual diagram in he created. I changed things up slightly by swapping out the floral tape “pistils” he created with decorative rhinestone and bead centers instead.

And for the sake of time, I also omitted the floral tape suggested for the underside of the flower (which helps to keep the flowers in place at the top of the stem) and just used a tiny dab of hot glue to help secure them. You can certainly do it either way – I just had to bust out a bunch of these at once, so time was of the essence! ;) (more…)
