{Semi-DIY} Spring Decorating: Modern Beach Pop

diy beach themed room makeover

On a recent shopping trip to Target, I instantly fell in love this this mod sea urchin inspired vase from the Threshold™ line. It has the look of some of the really high end designer vases, but a fraction of the price tag at $16.99. Yay :) I also grabbed its little buddy – another sea-creature-like tea light holder – for $5.99. If you’re not familiar with Threshold by Target yet, check out the fun little shopping video at the bottom of this post get quick feel for their {very chic} style!

Our living room is super neutral, which makes it easy to introduce different looks/colors from time to time via accessories and small decor. I’ve kind of been on a “beach” kick lately anyways (probably a side effect of the weather warming up!), so I decided to go for a “mini room makeover” with a Mod Beach vibe that incorporated the breezy blue, bright coral, and bright yellow colors that are popping up everywhere lately.

SEMI-DIY HOME DECORATING

I’m calling this makeover “semi DIY” because there’s definitely a combo of store-bought and DIY elements to it. DIY isn’t always necessary, but it’s a fun excuse to get crafty for a bit (I only spent a couple hours on this project) – and it allows you to get those small details in – the ones that often tie everything together and make a design look polished/finished.

For this project, I redecorated a couple of the console tables in our living room and made some simple wall hangings to replace the 3 frames that having been hanging above it for years. Time to change things up a bit! The main elements I used were ocean themed accent decor and a Threshold™ Shell Print curtain panel that was used for everything but the window ;) – plus seashells and few shades of acrylic craft paint that were used on the sea shells and starfish. This was all done while the kids were asleep last night, over the course of just a few hours, so pretty darn quick! Scroll down to see the rest of the pics – and to download the free printable sign I made for the 4×6 coral frame, which features a famous (and ocean relevant) Emerson quote. Hope this inspires you to do some “Semi DIY” of your own this Spring! ;)

Decor Highlights:

– Curtain panel used as decorative fabric.
I should probably explain my thinking here… when it comes to decorating for both parties and the home, I actually often use sheets, curtain panels, and even fabric shower curtains as big “fabric sheets” instead of for their intended use. I’ve found that this is often less expensive than buying 2-4 yards of fabric at a fabric store, and usually more convenient because I can get them at places like Target  – so no extra trip to a fabric store required. You can find some of the best & trendiest prints this way too. I still have enough leftover fabric from the one panel used in this project to cover a few accent pillows, make a runner for our dining table, etc. Maybe that can be next weekend’s project. :)

Sea Urchin Vase with Billy Balls (these are super durable fresh flowers that last soooo long!)

Starfish Wall Hangings
I painted starfish with craft paint and covered 3 blank art canvases with fabric from the Threshold curtain panel, simply stretching the fabric around the canvases and securing with hot glue. The starfish were also secured with hot glue.

Mason jars used as candleholders …filled with sand and embellished with twine and a painted shell

Mini glass bottles filled with sand and blue tinted water and topped with painted sea shells. The bottles are displayed on a “table runner” made from the curtain panel.

Any chance you can make that printable in an 8×10 format? I love the picture but need it for an 8×10 and it’s blurry if I try to crop the one you have on here.
