Trend Alert: Dollhouse Tea Party

Tonya Coleman here from Soireé Event Design, and I’m back with the “Trend Alert” where I share with you some of the hottest trends in party planning! Today’s guest post is all about the hot new trend — Dollhouse Tea Parties!

Tea parties have been around for a long time, but the new trend is to invite your friend’s to bring their favorite dolls to the party and have the girls and their dolls dress up in matching outfits for tea!  At the forefront of this trend is Ann Loren, a fashion designer who has an entire collection of gorgeous outfits for girls and matching outfits for their 18″ tall dolls.  What a cute idea!  My daughter loves to dress up, so I hosted a Dollhouse themed tea party for her and some of  her friends complete with a dress up bar, dessert table and photo shoot. They LOVED it!

Kentucky Derby® DIY #4: Southern Belle Stemware

DIY Southern Belle Wine Glasses

Hello from Louisville, where the 140th Annual Kentucky Derby® is only a few short days away! I really wanted to do something extra special to the wine glasses for our recent Kentucky Derby® Garden Party theme for 14 Hands, and came up with a fun idea for turning the bases of the glasses into (very tiny) “big hats”!

These “Southern Belle” glasses are surprisingly easy to make using felt, ribbon, & feathers, and if you switch up the colors a bit, they also double as drink markers to help guests keep track of their glass. Plus, they’re the perfect compliment to the “Southern Gentleman” Bow-Tie Drink Markers that we featured last week! Read on for the step by step details… (more…)

Kentucky Derby® DIY #3: Bow-Tie Salad & Decor Accents

DIY Bow Tie Pasta Party Ideas

For the 3rd post in our Kentucky Derby DIY series for 14 Hands Winery, I wanted to share something with you that’s SUPER easy and also a little outside the box, which happen to be 2 of my favorite attributes when it comes to party decor. ;)

Since we already had a lot of crepe paper roses and hat inspired decor, I wanted to add a little “Southern Gentleman” flair to our Kentucky Derby Garden Party too, and bow-ties are a great way to accomplish that. Last year we made a bunch of miniature fabric bow-ties, but this year I found a much easier way to make them… using striped bow-tie pasta!

I’ve always loved the look of striped farfalle, and happened to spot it in 2 fun colors at HomeGoods while out shopping for this party, and a lightbulb just went off! All you need to do is add some raffia (or ribbon, twine, etc) to the center of the pasta, and voila! Cute – and sturdy – little striped bow-ties, in no time at all.

The shape of each pasta piece is a little different as well, which helps to make the bow-ties double as drink markers for guests, especially if you’re using more than one color. Use 3D glue dots to attach them to wine glasses, and you should end up with something that looks a lot like this:

wine glasses with DIY farfalle bow-ties

Fun, right? And it doesn’t stop at stemware either… (more…)

Kentucky Derby® DIY #2: Crepe Paper Roses Tutorial

DIY Crepe Paper Roses Tutorial by HWTM

Since the Kentucky Derby® is often referred to as the “Run for the Roses” (in honor of the Garland of Roses presented to the winner), it seems only fitting that roses should play a key role in home Derby celebrations too! I wanted to showcase them in a fresh, creative way for our recent Kentucky Derby® Garden Party theme for 14 Hands Winery, so we made a bunch of red CREPE PAPER ROSES to use as party decor.

The textured crepe paper adds a lovely, lifelike feel to these flowers, and there are seriously so many things you can do with them – for all sorts of themes! For this particular party, though, I wanted the star centerpiece to be a horse figure decked out with an artsy “Garland of Roses” motif, and these little beauties helped to make that happen in the best possible way! Here’s a a close up of how it turned out (and you can see the full view at the bottom of the post):

close up of red crepe paper roses

This tutorial is very straight-forward and easy to follow, but it can be a little time consuming if you need to make a LOT of roses like we did, so this is a perfect “in front of the tv or while chatting with a friend” sort of project. Read on for the step-by-step tutorial, with helpful images included. Happy crafting! (more…)

Kentucky Derby® DIY #1: Golden Horses and Jockeys

Kentucky Derby Party Decor - Gold Painted Horses and Jockeys

Last week, I shared the new Kentucky Derby® Garden Party theme that I recently designed for 14 Hands Winery with you, and now it’s time to dig a little deeper into the “how to” details! I wanted to kick off our mini DIY tutorial series with one of my favorite easy & inexpensive Derby party ideas: Golden Horses and Jockeys. Why gold specifically? As a nod to the much-sought-after Kentucky Derby® winner’s trophy, of course! Plus it just makes your decor look really nice. ;)

In a nutshell, you’ll need horse/jockey elements + a nice shade of metallic gold spray paint. The shade and finish of gold is important because it really affects the look of your finished pieces. And I do mean REALLY. I like Design Master’s Brilliant Gold, which has a lovely matte satin finish and isn’t overly yellow or magenta.

As I mentioned earlier, this concept is super easy, but I think the images below will help to convey how very effective these metallic accents can be, as well as give you some good ideas for incorporating them into your own Derby celebrations at home. And, away we go….
