Emerald City: A Nod to Oz 4th Birthday Party (29 photos)
Party Details (for DIY or Project Description): I wanted to create a
magical world for my daughter Emerald's 4th Birthday this year, and
without a doubt this theme couldn't have been more fitting! I
absolutely love the color green, I have since I could pick out a
favorite color and her name was no different "Emerald Jade" was her
name long before she was even born. As a Designer, I knew that the
play on words and ode to Oz was going to be fun plan and execute.
Focal Point: The focal point is definitely the dessert table- the
backdrop was composed of a vintage mirror nestled in lush,
handcrafted, white paper flowers. I used simple cylinder vases with
LED lights to create a sparkling "Emerald City". I tend not to be
very literal when I design so continuing with mini paper flowers for
the yellow brick road was a natural for me. I also used green candy
and glitter cupcake wrappers to vary and complete the cityscape. The
luxe Emerald sequined linen was just magical. The cake artist was
especially kind to us, not only was the cake beautiful- she had a few
hours to make these additions as the original topper ordered had not
arrived. The brick road and bow were all late breaking news accents
to the cake that really made it stand out, let alone the rainbow
layered goodness inside!
Another favorite décor piece is the Emerald Ribbon and Crepe Paper
pomanders perched high atop white candlesticks for the kids table.
They were labor intensive to make but oh so worth it!! I used a
different texture for each pomander to add interest. The candlesticks
were sprayed a bright white for contrast.
The custom invites and menu cards were both super sweet and cute. I
used the menu cards as a part of the children's table setting-it was
fun for them along with their parents to order from (the waiter
thanked me too). I decorated the white gables boxes, but left them
empty. They served as décor during the party, and loot boxes to fill
and take home later.
The most important thing that I kept in mind during the entire design
process was to balance the color palette with white, I didn't want it
to look like a St. Patty's day party. I also used the blue/white
gingham pattern from Dorothy's dress as placemats to break up the
I have to also add that the kids really got into the Face Painting,
and the artist was truly an amazing talent.
TIPS: Start early and edit as you go. There are several items that
had to be cut right before the party. Whether it is for time, budget,
or both.....being able to make edits can save you a lot of stress.
I'm a stickler about the details, but I can't do it all. It's okay
to let some things go and enjoy all that you have!
