Where the Wild Things Are (24 photos)
Where the Wild Things Are, has always been a favorite story of mine. So when celebrating my son's first birthday selecting this theme was a no brainer. I knew at this age great entertainment usually involved Music and Movement for children, so I had a mommy and me style Kindermusik teacher come and engage the children by letting them shake maracas, beat drums, and sing along to kids favorites. All of the children really participated and had so much fun. I thought what a better way to showcase the Kindermusik, then to Let the Wild Rumpus Begin!
I wanted to highlight the cute cake so I had my cake maker, Andrea, from the Yellow Rose Cakery, create a two tiered cake. I incorporated two of the most important scenic elements from the story, the forest Wthere the Wild Things Are and the ocean that Max crosses. My cake maker per my direction created the bottom layer as the forest and had the wild things peeking out from behind the trees and the upper layer was Max in his boat crossing the ocean. She could not have done a better job and it was better than I even envisioned.
For the lunch I kept it simple by creating a long banquet style table for all the children to sit at and put out custom made lunch sacks with Wild Thing toppers to go along with the theme. Inside the sacks were uncrustables, goldfish, a clementine, and apple sauce. The kids were able to manage the meal themselves and enjoyed it.
Lastly, I wanted to give away favors that people would treasure and not just toss in the garbage, so I couldn't think of a better favor than to gift the wonderful book, Where the Wild Things Are, to the friends and family that shared the special occassion with us. I also gave the cutest most special caramel apple to each child. My amazingly talented friend spent 14 hours working on these apples for me and they were out of this world cute.
Hope you love this party as much I loved throwing it! - XOXO Emily
