A Birthday Meets Memorial Day (13 photos)

When your birthday falls on Memorial Day weekend, the color scheme kind of becomes a no-brainer. Since the party was for my hubby, and red/white/blue feels masculine, I figured "why not"? I added khaki to prevent the party from feeling too on-the-nose patriotic. My motto is "go bold or go home" so there were a lot of patterns to give visual interest. Our toddler wanted to get in on the event design action, so I bought a roll of craft paper to make table runners and overlays, which he "helped" paint. He was so proud if himself! Leftover craft paper was used to make pouches that held napkins and utensils. Table centerpieces were burlap wrapped mason jars that held red carnations- casual and cute! Fabric strips were used to make the buffet backdrop and bar table "skirt." Nothing says summer like watermelon and lemonade, so Watermelon Margaritas and Rosemary Vodka Lemonade were on tap for the bog kids to enjoy... out of mason jars of course. Star cupcake toppers, a pennant banner and "Happy Birthday" sign added a festive flair to the desserts, which included homemade berry ice cream, mini cupcakes, red velvet cake and blueberry pie. The Southern contingency was psyched! Parents got to catch up while the kids played basketball and croquet. A party fun for the whole family!
