My little red-head understandably identifies and loves Disney’s very ginger Ariel and for a year begged for a Little Mermaid birthday party. I couldn’t let her go disappointed so we began planning months in advance and decided to go with an Under the Sea theme. We hosted an afternoon affair in her honor. I started with a whimsical mermaid and worked from there, adding “Sebastian” (the crab) for the boys and mermaids for the girls. Bubbles and shells became poignant accents throughout the whole theme.
I used several elements like hanging lanterns and tropical paper flowers, using sand buckets, shells, and pearl like balls and glittery “greenery” to create a sea like theme. The eating table was also adorned with a simple bubble chandelier.
The children were welcomed with dancing bubbles as they entered the backyard. We began the party with a craft. With Charlotte’s birthday being so close to the holidays we took the plastic, clear ball ornaments that we used in the décor for each child to make their own “bubble” ornament. They were able to use glitter and stickers to personalize their prize. The personalized bags were used to not only label their ornaments, but to take them home.
The kids feasted on cake, cupcakes, cheese coral (cheese puffs), mango sea foam (see recipe below), crackers and cheese, and fruit skewers.
The sea foam bottles used were Danimal Fruit Smoothie bottles. I removed the packaging and washed them in the dishwasher. Other than the cake, this little mini float was a favorite of both kids and parents.
The cones holding the Cheese Coral were made out of the paper created for the envelope liners for the invitations. Each child also had a shell at their place at the table – mirroring the shell pattern in the paper goods.
The children were given one more gift upon leaving – a personalized mini notepad with the same mermaid/crab motif.
Fun was had by all and my little mermaid was happy as a clam with her little afternoon soiree.
Mango Sea Foam Recipe:

A 2 liter of Sprite
Mix and serve (for an adult version mix equal parts Mango Sea Foam and Riesling – I used Barefoot brand – a BIG crowd pleaser)
