Vintage Zombie Halloween Bash (27 photos)
When I started planning a Halloween table, I really wanted to do something different than the typical Halloween themes, so I chose zombies. However, my challenge was to create something that would be fun for adults but not give the kiddos nightmares. So, I settled on a vintage zombie movie theme and made it more campy and spooky than bloody and scary.
My budget for this party was $150, and though I used a professional baker and fondant artist for help on a couple of items, I managed to stay just under budget by re-purposing items from around the house, shopping at the dollar store and doing homemade whenever possible.
I designed the printables using vintage images and a color palette of greens, red, black and amber as a nod to those old Hollywood horror movies. Decorations came mostly from Dollar Tree, while cake stands, serving dishes, antiques and some Halloween decorations came from my own collection (in fact, most of my black serving pieces were picked up at Hobby Lobby last year after Halloween when they were marked down 85% off). I printed off vintage zombie movie posters and framed them in dollar store frames to create a spooky back drop.
For the spooky edibles, I served zombie cookies and eyeball cake pops by the fabulous Stacey of Treats 4 Ta-Tas (she donates 100% of money earned to Breast Cancer Research), homemade Living Dead Cupcakes (chocolate cherry cupcakes) with edible headstone toppers by Sugar & Stripes Co. and some doll arms I bought off of Etsy, homemade Zombie Mousse (Chocolate Mousse Parfaits), homemade Monster Munch, and Zombie Juice (lime soda) to drink.
The Living Dead cupcakes were definitely the hit of the party and were so much fun to make! I baked chocolate cupcakes and hollowed out the middle. I filled the holes with cherry pie filling and then frosted the tops with chocolate icing. I crumbled the extra cake pieces and sprinkled them over the top of the cupcakes to resemble dirt. Then I stuck in a fondant headstone and an arm. Big impact, little effort!
Everyone had a blast and we had a great time talking about Halloween, zombies, and old movies!
