Caleb's "You Are My Sunshine" 1st Birthday Party (29 photos)
Our son, Caleb, has always been a very happy baby. His gorgeous smiles & contagious belly laughs have filled our home with so much joy. So, when it came time to thinking about his 1st birthday party, I found myself drawn to the sweet, simple, happy theme "You Are My Sunshine." His birthday also happens to be the day after the first day of spring, which made it even more perfect!
I went with decor in shades of yellow, with subtle pops of orange and blue. I crafted a ribbon backdrop, pinwheels, chevron bunting, a photo banner, a yellow balloon banner, and framed some adorable sunshine printables, as well as photos from his first-year photo shoot. I lined mason jars with lemons and filled them with yellow flowers and pinwheels, and covered the food table with a cute printed yellow tablecloth.
I baked a special cake for the birthday boy, iced with buttercream in a yellow ombre pattern and topped with more pinwheels and a big "1." The other guests enjoyed cherry cheesecake cupcakes topped with icing and sunshine cookie pops.
As for the rest of the menu, I tried to stick with yummy finger foods that were yellow or orange. We served: mini eggrolls with plum sauce, mini mac and cheese bites, yellow & orange peppers with dip, corn chips with corn salsa, deviled eggs, fruit platter (mango, cantaloupe, pineapple), popcorn in paper cones, and mini croissants with cheese. We also served lemonade in mason jars with striped paper straws. I love those small, simple details! Everything was delicious and eaten right up!
All of the children at the party were given little loot yellow loot bags filled with fun things like sunshine stickers, glow sticks, and bubbles.
It was a cheerful, happy afternoon for my sweet one-year-old boy, who was surrounded by all of the people who love him most. He happily "opened gifts" (a.k.a. played with tissue paper), showed off his newly acquired walking skills, and dug right into his delicious cake. And he looked the part, too, dressed in an adorable custom-made onesie with chevron suspenders and a bright yellow bow tie.
I had all of the guests sign a canvas with one of his one-year photos, which I will save for him in his memory box -- a little token of the fun & special day that celebrated the first year of his precious life.
Despite the fact that spring still hadn't quite arrived (we live in Ottawa, Canada), in our home it was a very warm & sunny day indeed. A perfect party for our dear Caleb Shay.
