DIY giant paper flower tutorial

A few months ago, we featured an incredibly gorgeous Frida Kahlo Inspired Party by Tania Fischer and Veronica Plasencia. One of the highlights of that celebration was the insanely cool paper flower backdrop that Tania made to serve as a focal point at the party. (See refresher image above.) Well…. she’s back today to share with us exactly how she did it! Scroll down for step by step instructions on how to make these statement-making paper flowers yourself, including Tania’s trick to giving the petals that pretty natural looking curl!

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

1. Here is a template you can download and use for your petals, but I usually just do it freehand. Nature is not perfect, and thats what makes these flowers look a little more real.

You will need to cut:
•
8-9 large petals
• 6-7 medium petals
• 4-6 small ones
save small pieces, some times they help for the pistil in the center

2. Once you cut the petals out, cut upward into the middle of the bottom of the petals, about an inch or so (depending on the size of the petal). Glue the 2 parts (sides) to make it fold naturally.

3. Curl the tips of the petals with a spatula, a cake knife or a pencil. Repeat steps 2 & 3 with every petal in every size.

4. Using a used gift box, foam core or corrugated cardboard, cut a circular base

5. Start pasting each petal around the circle.

6. Keep going all the way around with the larger petals, and once you run out, start adding in the smaller petals as you get closer to the center.

7. At the end in the center, you can put 2 petals glued at the top and the bottom or using a pencil you can roll one super tight and paste it in.

Look around your garden to get inspired for the shapes of your petals. Feel free to experiment with colors and textures too!

Hi I love love love these flowers but could you please tell me what kind of paper was used, you say cover paper but I don’t know what that means. And where can I purchase this type of paper? Your feedback wold be greatly appreciated. Thanks and keep making beautiful works of art!

Hi there :) “Cover paper” is really just another way of saying “card stock”. It’s paper that’s a little thicker than the plain copy paper typically used for printing. You can find it in packs at places like Michaels, JoAnn, Hobby Lobby, etc. Here are some examples. Hope that helps!
