Live from GMA! + Thoughts on “Putting Yourself Out There”

Quick Jump To » Comments

Hello from the Big Apple! I did a segment on Good Morning America Live this morning, which is basically the after show that streams live online right after the broadcast. You can watch it right here!

We talked about TV Viewing Party ideas for 3 popular shows that are just coming back for fall: Dancing with the Stars, Scandal, and Modern Family. There’s lots of fun stuff to check out – from sparkly costume-inspired decorating ideas and “Scandal-icious” treats to a (humorous!) Modern Family inspired photo station. There wasn’t time to touch on every idea – including one of my personal favorites – the tray of “Gloria’s Baby Cheeses” inspired by this episode of Modern Family – so I might try to post a few more of the specifics later – but in the meantime you can download the free printables we designed for all 3 shows here and here. :)

Putting Yourself Out There

Doing this segment was a really great experience, but it’s also something that falls outside of my personal comfort zone… I have always been more of a behind-the-scenes kind of girl by nature. I wish I was one of those people that was just instantly drawn to the camera and couldn’t wait to “get up there and say my piece!” – but the truth is that it’s just not a natural feeling for me… it’s something I really have to work at.

So – despite the fact that I felt super excited and grateful for the opportunity this morning – I also genuinely had to push myself to get out there. It’s like one of those weird push/pull things that happens when you’re excited by something and also scared by it. Give me a table or room to style and I’m all over it. Put a camera in my face and ask me to talk about that room? For some reason that just feels like a totally different world.

And the reason I’m telling you this is that the concept of being brave and putting yourself out there is something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately, and something I really feel compelled to encourage others about too. Why? Because I know first-hand how frustrating/exhausting it can be to feel “hand cuffed” or held back by something that scares you… and at some point you just get to the “enough is enough already!” mindset.

I’m there right now. Life is going by so fast lately that it makes me think of how many great and interesting experiences each of us could miss out on by letting our fears get the best of us, and that’s no fun for anyone. This kind of thing is usually not an easy thing to change and requires taking an active approach to solving the problem… meaning a legitimate plan as opposed to just “hoping it will pass eventually” type of thinking – but I can assure you that the small wins along the way will make the effort worth it!

Since the theme of the day is TV shows, I want to leave you with a quote that I love from another great show:

I’m exactly the same way. I’m so much better behind the scenes, but that feels so limiting. It’s something I’m working on. I definitely don’t want to be on the sidelines of my own life!

Love your insight on putting yourself out there, especially since someone like you always seems like such a natural in front of people. One of my biggest fears has always been failing or looking foolish in front of others. It took me about 35 years to realize I missed out on so many things I wanted to do because I was afraid, and quite frankly, I am tired of that! Fear isn’t nearly as bad as regret! Great segment on GMA Live! Your ideas are fantastic and uber creative as always! =)

You are just spot on, Jenn. Life is too short and I have found that most of the time, the fear of something is so much worse than the actual “thing” itself. I love that quote and will share with you one of my faves: “So many people believe in you. Make sure you are one of them.” Proud of you and so happy for you. Great job!!!
