10 Tips for a “Love Potion” Valentine’s Day Party!
I can’t say it was intentional, but after designing this party, I realized that I’d managed to work my very favorite holiday into another one! Welcome to Halloween + Valentine’s Day. 😂
There’s still tons of traditional Valentine fun here, but I always love a good creative twist – AND treating guests to something unexpected & new. 😍 Taking the “Love Potion” angle inspired me to bring in some extra whimsy and *magical* fun.
P.S. I REALLY love the idea of using this theme for a bridal shower too… so if you’re already planning a love-inspired bridal shower or are still on the lookout for a great theme, consider this your *sign*. 😉🏹💕
1. Love Potion Centerpieces
These centerpieces are so fun and EASY! Just fill glass bottles with colored water, glitter, etc, then add decorative labels. I used the editable Fancy Labels and Bottle Labels from my Love Potion collection here.
2. Treat Yo’Self Station
One thing any Valentine’s Day party should not be short on? TREATS! 😉 They don’t all have to be the edible kind though… this “Treat Yo’Self” station features super cute Valentine’s Day sunnies + cute containers for bringing home DIY sugar & lip scrubs (more on those below!).
3. Sugar & Lip Scrub Station
Activities are a big consideration at any party… but especially when kids are involved. Sugar scrub stations are easy to set up, already *sweet* themed, and incredibly fitting for Valentine’s Day. Guests can personalize the scrubs with their own favorite fragrances & colors. Added bonus: all the mixing of ingredients and oils and droppers really complements the “potion” part of the Love Potion theme!
I couldn’t resist adding lips 💋 to this station too, so it became a sugar AND lip scrub station. (The printable recipe card signs are editable, so you can modify the ingredients however you like.)
4. Love Potion Plants
For some reason, plants just go hand-and-hand with the idea of “potions” for me… in kind of a Harry-Potter-Magic way. And you don’t need to do a lot to make a plant feel mysterious and magical. Just pair them with decorative lips, playful signs, and/or labels!
In addition to using full-size plants, I stuck some tiny succulent branches into decorative straws, then displayed them in a “potion bottle” filled with pink liquid (water).
5. Adorable Valentine Sunnies
Heart and lip-shaped sunglasses make for super-cute party photos! I found this glasses set on Amazon (and bought 2 packs).
Want a creative way to display your party shades & accessories?
This wooden “display stand” is actually a thread spool holder that I picked up at Michaels for $10! I also used it to hold glow-in-the-dark sunglasses & bracelets at a Camp Out birthday party. 🤩
6. Kisses & Cauldrons Garland
I just love this cheeky party garland so much! It’s unexpected & random but perfectly captures the playfulness of the Love Potion theme. The mini plastic cauldrons are filled with tissue paper “flames”. Click here for the full DIY tutorial.
7. Love Potion Punch
You can really serve any favorite punch that’s red or pink and call it “Love Potion Punch“. This one has raspberry-orange sherbet though… and that’s definitely the *magic* ingredient! Punch recipe + closer look here.
8. Love-ly Coordinating Drinks
In addition to party punch, serve up some easy grab-and-go drinks that double as party decor. This means they have great packaging and coordinating colors!
We had cans of IZZE in colors that matched the party + bottled water with the labels removed & replaced with love-themed stickers.
9. Love Monster Cupcakes
Cupcake decorating stations are great for any Valentine’s Day party, but you can also add some creative guidelines based on your theme (& guest age range). This party was primarily 8 to 11-year-olds, and it was so fun to see their cute, monster-like creations featuring giant gummy lips, way too many eyeballs (or just one giant eye!), and Pocky Stick unicorn/narwhal/monster horns. 😆😍
10. I Love GOO Slime Station
Parents might not *love* this activity idea right away, but I guarantee you the KIDS will! (And honestly, it’s so fun to hear them having a blast with this stuff that you *might* even learn to love slime stations too. 😜)
Just like with the sugar scrub station, I love how all the mixing & ingredients plays up the “potion” aspect of this theme. And to make things easier on everyone, I created a separate Valentine’s Day Slime Party Station post with all the details.
That’s a wrap on the 10 Love Potion party tips! One more thing worth mentioning though…
Personalization in parties is super important to me
- I try to work guest & guest-of-honor names in whenever possible.
- It makes the guests feel special (like you really planned for them to be there)
- plus, people just generally love to see their name on fun things. 😉
So… I wanted to show how you can also use the same Fancy Labels from the jars as name tags for favor bags, small gift boxes, etc. The sugar & lip scrubs doubled as party “favors” here, so these bags made for a cute way to carry them home (and avoid confusion on which scrubs belonged to who).
