Modern Kitty Cat Birthday Cake Tutorial

homemade kitty cat party cake

Welcome to one of my all-time favorite party cakes! 😻

This simple & modern Kitty Cat Birthday Cake looks great and is wonderfully EASY to create. Cake Topper printables do all the heavy lifting here as far as decorating goes (the party hat + cat whiskers, nose, ears, and tail).

For the cake portion, you can either make it yourself or place an order with a bakery. If going the make-it-yourself route, check out the DIY tutorial below!

DIY Kitty Cat Birthday Cake

***

You’ll need:

  • 2 boxes of your favorite cake mix
  • 4 tubs of white frosting
  • pink food coloring
  • cardboard cake circles – 6″ & 8″ (1 of each)
  • printable kitty cat cake toppers

Instructions:

Bake one cake in two 8” round cake pans and the other in two 6” rounds. (Only fill the 6” pans halfway. You’ll have a little extra cake batter.)

When cool, use a serrated knife to level the top of all 4 cake layers, so they stack evenly.

Frost the 6” and 8” cakes separately, using the same method:
Set the bottom cake layer on a cake circle. Frost the top, then add the 2nd layer. Frost around the outside of the cake to create a smooth base layer, also called a “crumb coat”.

Refrigerate both cakes for at least an hour, then apply the top layer of white frosting.

Stack the 6” cake on the 8” cake to form the kitty cat’s body.

Tint 1 cup of frosting pink, and use it to pipe a pink “collar” where the 2 cakes meet.

Cut out the printable kitty cat cake toppers. Hot glue the ears, nose, whiskers, and tail to toothpicks or wood skewers, then insert them into the cake. Assemble the birthday hat with tape, hot glue a craft pom on top, and place it on top of the cake.

For the purr-fect finishing touch, embellish the hat with the guest of honor’s age or first initial. (I used a scrapbook sticker for the “3” shown here.)
