Trend Alert: Designer Buttercream Frosted Cakes!
Tonya Coleman here from Soireé Event Design, and I’m back with the “Trend Alert” where I share with you some of the hottest trends in party planning! Today’s guest post is all about Designer Buttercream Frosted Cakes and how this new trend is a fabulous budget friendly option!
Buttercream frosted cakes are my FAVORITE and they just so happen to be making a big splash on the party scene with many designer finishes. They are also a more affordable option to fondant covered cakes. The versatility and creativity available now with buttercream frosted cakes is definitely a Look for Less option as opposed to pricier fondant covered cakes. Designer buttercream frosted cakes range from $70-$100 while fondant covered cakes are an average of $250.
My favorites are from My Sweet Things… they are as yummy as they are gorgeous! Check out how Kathi has transformed traditional buttercream frosted cakes into designer works of art by using these FABULOUS frosting techniques. Who knew buttercream could look this good!
8 DESIGNER BUTTERCREAM FROSTING TECHNIQUES:
1. Swirl Frosted Cakes
The colors on this cake would be perfect for any summer party this year! The bold blue against the clean white, makes for a modern and gorgeous centerpiece to any dessert table!
2. Ribbon Frosted Cakes
This technique has been on the scene for a while, but look how creative Kathi got by adding her signature flower design on top of the cake.
3. Rosette Frosted Cakes
Dainty and feminine, this pink rosette covered cake would be perfect for a baby shower or any girly themed party. And with the ombre party trend still going strong, it is gorgeous on a rosette frosted cake!
4. Petal Frosted Cakes
This is my favorite buttercream frosted technique! This green and white cake is just gorgeous with the huge green buttercream flower on top, and this rainbow cake is a definite WOW-FACTOR!
5. Ruffle Frosted Cakes
This ruffle frosting technique is the perfect base for the girly octopus swimming on top!
6. Milk Glass Dot Frosted Cakes
This decoration makes any cake look extra fabulous- whether it’s bold white on white or multicolor!
7. Themed Cakes
Look how cute and creative these cakes are! Using buttercream and different frosting techniques, Kathi created a cake that looks like a girly snake slithering its way through grass. All made with creamy and delicious buttercream! That’s my kind of cake!
8. Decorate with Buttercream (& Cookie) Toppers!
Using frosted cookies is a great alternative to a pricier fondant cake topper that can cost up to $65, as opposed to a frosted cookie that costs on average $6 each! A gorgeous white-on-white cake with a pop of color on top as a bookworm eases it’s way out of a colorful starfish flower. And that #2 on the top of the cake must be fondant right? Nope… it’s buttercream!

Pinning this!! Love it :)
Your cakes are beautiful! What recipe do you use for your frosting?
How did you get the octopus body shape and it be smooth? I’m going to do a pirate cake (not ship cake) and on top is a boat out of chocolate buttercream but it’s smooth and the shape is perfect. how do I do this?
I need the buttercream recipe youve used to design these cakes. They’re flawless! :)
Thanks so much for including my Rosette technique. Its so exciting to see something I created back in 2011 take on such popularity!
So beautiful, someone give the recipes to these cakes. Gorgeous.
Is there a book i can buy to learn these techniques?
