hwtm and glad cheese buffet

I’m excited to share our Rustic Wine & Cheese Party with you today! This was an outdoor get-together featuring eco-friendly party decor, chalkboard design accents, and simple-but-tasty recipes.

The weather’s been beautiful lately, so an evening backyard party sounded especially fun. PLUS, as much as I love my kids (ages 1 and 3), I really wanted a good excuse to invite some adult friends over for a little wine and grown-up conversation! So that’s exactly what we did. 😉🍷

PARTY DETAILS:

This was a fun & casual Wine & Cheese party we held in our backyard… I wanted it to have a bit of a rustic vibe, so we used elements like chalkboard paint, wood, raffia, twine, and chalkboard-themed printables to create this feel.

Painted tin cans and wine bottles created a nice pop of color… blue might seem like a strange color choice for a wine party, but that’s the color of our backyard, and it makes decorating much easier when your color palette matches your space. It also means you can reuse the decor over and over! 🙌

Food:

  • Cranberry Pecan Cheese Balls
  • Apricot Almond Cheese Bites
  • Prosciutto Wrapped Melon
  • {Create Your Own} Bruschetta – (we set out various toppings guests could add)
  • Gourmet Cheeses: Garlic & Herb Boursin, Aged Cheddar, Auricchio Reggiano, Smoked Gouda, Castello Rosenborg Danish Blue

Drinks:

  • Red Sangria
  • Water with Lemon – served in a cool Wine Barrel Dispenser that I forgot to photograph… it’s part of the giveaway though!
  • Lots of WINE, of course! ;)

DIY Projects:

  • Painted wine bottles embellished with twine & raffia
  • Painted & embellished upcycled tin cans with backyard clippings & mini chalk board signs
  • Wine cork frames (one all-cork & one a combo of chalkboard paint & corks)
  • DIY bunting banner made from scrap fabric and twine
  • Wine cork “hurricane” made from 2 nested glass cylinders + recycled wine corks
  • “temporarily” personalized plates made from white plates + chalkboard stickers & chalk
  • Printable cheese makers

I absolutely LOVE this party. My mom and sister are currently planning a couples shower for me and my partner. They are hosting it at a winery and the design plan features cork and chalkboard accents. My favorite element from this party is the cork frames with the chalkboard–it is a PERFECT addition!

    • alyssa March 15, 2013 at 5:14 pm

Thanks so much Caryl! So glad we could provide inspiration for shower :) Take pictures, we’d love to see how everything comes together!

I love the upcycle element behind this party! Fun and chic!

  16. Morgan March 15, 2013 at 4:36 pm

All the little details for this party are fantastic – I LOVE the signs! For a wine party, some of my favorite tips to be eco-friendly are to use empty wine bottles as vases. Either with the wine label or with a special label for the party. After the party, you can take some special bottles and find vendors who will cut the bottles and turn them into candle holders or etch them for you!

  17. Kristina M. March 15, 2013 at 4:37 pm

Love this party, but I love wine and cheese ;) My eco friendly tip, at my last dinner I used saved wine corks as place card holders and for the “cards” in the wine corks I used leaves from my magnolia tree. The leaves are so great to decorate with and you can also write on them.

  50. Lindsay Ward March 15, 2013 at 6:19 pm

  86. Kim Imsande March 16, 2013 at 6:29 am

The DIY cork frames and printables that can be used again for kitchen/other decor. Genius! They are what “pop” to me in the photos. I also use corks and instead of using as namecards I scatter them around with funny wine quotes printed on them that you find online. I send them home with as favors after the party. Acrylic grapes hanging out of empty wine bottles are another favorite for decorating and can be reused later. Love this party ideas!!!

  87. Mindy March 16, 2013 at 6:34 am

There is so much about this party that I love. But my favorite, the one thing that attracted me to it first, is the ‘you had me at merlet’ sign with wine corks.

The chalkboard, slate, element used throughout was so complimentary to the natural wine cork aspect of an eco friendly wine tasting. The recycling center signs were the perfect ending to help with the clean up. However, the easiest tip was using twine to tie in the glassware and containers. A tip from me, if you would like to create the wine cork DIY’s and haven’t collected enough of your own corks local bars are willing to donate.

  120. Susi Prola March 17, 2013 at 3:00 pm

Thank you for the free printables! I’m planning a “Celebrating Life” birthday party for my Momma’s 68th b-day.
She just had a heart valve replaced but also had a huge 9cm thoricic aneurysm repaired in mid Jan. (Caught before rupture. For reference, usually between 4-6cm they’re rushing a patient into surgery). Docs told us she had very little chance of surviving the heart surgery. She has always done so much for everyone else so I want to celebrate her & her amazing “second chance!”
3 weeks later she ended up in another emergency surgery to have her gallbladder removed. Talk about being put through the wringer. I’ve been her private nurse & by her side every minute.

She loves flowers & butterflies and this Eco Friendly theme will be easy to combine to make a very casual, chic, easy & fun party!

  121. Melissa N. March 17, 2013 at 3:50 pm

Wine, savory hors d’oeuvres, chalkboard accents and eco friendly…what’s not to love! I would have never thought to have a composting station. Awesome!

  122. Jodi Frye March 17, 2013 at 4:38 pm

I loved all the yummy cheeses! Might go eat some blue cheese I have in the fridge right now! Yum!

  123. abby March 17, 2013 at 5:41 pm

  125. Corky Stonebraker March 17, 2013 at 10:03 pm

Especially like the chalkboard signs…hard to choose just one!…and the food labels, too! These ideas want me want to start planning a party right now! Thanks for the inspiration.

  126. Alicia March 17, 2013 at 10:45 pm

As with other readers, I also love the chalkboard theme! They’re great since you can reuse them in a other party. Even the chalk is cute!!

  127. Alicia N March 17, 2013 at 10:48 pm

I love the chalkboard theme! So great that they can be used for another party!

  128. Luis M March 18, 2013 at 12:40 am

The food, especially the array of cheeses, looks great.

  129. Erica March 18, 2013 at 6:40 am

I love, love, LOVE the “temporarily” personalized plates, they are so cute. I’m living in Eastern Europe right now, and find it really difficult to buy biodegradable plates for parties. We do a lot of entertaining, and I hate to waste paper and plastic, but they just don’t have the biodegradable options here. We already use cloth napkins all the time, but this is a brilliant idea that I’m definitely going to try! Thanks!

  130. Alli Brown March 18, 2013 at 6:51 am

I LOVED the create your own bruschetta! My friends all like theirs made a little differently, so it’s such a fun idea to allow your guests to personalize to their taste. Also, thanks for the free printables, they are so cute!

  131. Katie Palmieri March 18, 2013 at 7:37 am

I love how the corks were reused throughout the party, but especially with the frames with wine quotes inside! I love the inspiration and will be adding them to my house!

  135. Tiffany March 18, 2013 at 10:09 am

throw this party for myself! :)

  138. Laura H. Jean March 18, 2013 at 10:51 am

Love this! I actually have a wine club that meets at my house, so I’m always looking for ways to upcycle the bottles and corks. I’ve been saving the corks to make trivets, keychains, cheese spreaders and magnets. The bottles I’ve used for olive oil (just clean and add an oil dispenser top), dish soap ( the screw on top bottles work great for pumps) and tiki torches! I think I’ll def have to try this theme for one of our meetings! :)

  139. everythingsheknows March 18, 2013 at 10:54 am

What a fun party! I love the witty wine signs. It’s “wine-o-clock! Aren’t we lucky” – so cute and clever. And all of the food looks delicious! What a great idea.

  143. Bonnie B March 18, 2013 at 12:05 pm

How do you pick one element of this party to love? As always you have fabulous ideas & remarkable creativity in pulling them off! It is wonderful to see so many ideas pulling from “what you have” and not running out to buy things to fit every theme. Taking trash & turning it into party treasure is inspiring – it makes me want to look at things differently.

  144. Sarah Wright March 18, 2013 at 12:08 pm

Great setup! Love the blue table the food looks so yummy! Great job and thank you for the inspiration!

I love the personalized plates and the slate serving tray!

  152. LaReshea McCoy March 19, 2013 at 8:25 am

This party was truly amazing and creative!! My favorite element of the party were the framed quotes.. in a world that revolves around a ” hurry up and do or go” mentality it is important to remember to make time for the little things in life that brings us joy! Whether its a glass of wine, stopping to smell roses, or making our communities better by recycling products..it’s the little details that count!!:))) If I were to win I would use the theme to create awareness about the benefits of recycling and have a sip of wine in the process-Great party!!

  153. Veronica March 19, 2013 at 8:29 am

I love everything here, but my fave is the printable Trash, Compost, and Recycling station signs.

My family thinks I’m obsessed with recycling. They’re probably right. After every party I go through the trash to make sure that recycling and trash is properly sorted.

I have plans to make some form of the printable trash, compost and recycling station signs for every party (my color coded recycling bags are soooooo not working…lol).

  154. Tobi Drabczyk March 19, 2013 at 8:52 am

  158. Liz B. March 19, 2013 at 11:49 am

  232. Giselle March 20, 2013 at 11:42 am

What a great idea. I love the reusable labels! Another to make the party even more eco is in terms of the kind of food you serve. Sourcing the cheese from local companies and the fruit in season from the area will not only make the party more eco but can limit waste by having less packaging that needs to be thrown away while you are preparing for the party.

  233. Mary Blake March 20, 2013 at 11:44 am

I am the queen of recycling. Everything about this party appeals to me.

  238. Agatha C. March 20, 2013 at 12:10 pm

It’s great that you guys are focusing on reducing waste because it does add up when trying to decorate for a party. I liked the reusable chalkboard signs and I actually have some of those that I used for my shower. I also tried to used some fabric as table cloths/runners to tie in the color scheme (after washing, I plan to use it for other things) and the paper I used for bunting will be recycled in my scrapbook.

  239. Kelly M March 20, 2013 at 12:20 pm

  243. Shalisha P. March 20, 2013 at 12:55 pm

What an awesome idea: a party with only one bag of garbage remaining! How many times has a party ended and we have bags and bags of trash remaining (paper cups, napkins, plates, utensils, tablecloths. . .you get it). I’ve been meaning to label my trash cans as well, so thank you very much for the free printables. The wine and cheese theme turned out beautifully, might I add. Bravo!

  244. laura marie March 20, 2013 at 1:06 pm

  250. Robin March 20, 2013 at 1:40 pm

Coincidence! I just put the cheese knives set on my Pottery Barn wish list a few weeks ago! We are planning a Tuscan themed spring dinner party so this would be perfect!

  251. Kristen | Popcorn on the Stove March 20, 2013 at 1:42 pm

I love those signs in the cheese… and of course the sign that says “You had me at Merlot!”!

  252. Gen March 20, 2013 at 1:54 pm

I love the chalkboard plates, nice touch!

  253. Leigh Ann Hartman March 20, 2013 at 2:18 pm

My favorite element is the cheese knife set. To die for! Your party has given me great inspiration for a Bastille Day Soiree I’m throwing this summer. Thank you!

  254. Elizabeth Coleman March 20, 2013 at 2:57 pm

I loved the banner made with scrap fabric and twine! So beautiful!

  255. Jane March 20, 2013 at 3:06 pm

I love the wine cork decor elements – I think they’re casual but still grown-up.

  256. laura March 20, 2013 at 3:59 pm

What don’t I like about this party! It’s amazing! If I had to choose, it would be the wine table, it’s perfect!

  257. Mina March 20, 2013 at 6:19 pm

When we have trees removed that have not faired well in the winter weather, we have our tree-man cut the logs into thinner pieces. We have the kids treat and stain the wood pieces and use them as hostess gifts paired with a cheese knife.

  258. rhiannon March 20, 2013 at 6:34 pm

This is my kind of party! Love it all, but my favourite element is the use of chalk and corks – I especially like the ‘you had me at merlot’ sign! Clever ;-)

  259. Alicia March 20, 2013 at 6:51 pm

The best part of a party is the food! No the drinks! Wait, I’m supposed to say company, but come on, it’s totally the desserts.

  260. meredith montgomery March 20, 2013 at 6:53 pm

I love the cork decorations! And the printables are super cute!!!

  261. Jacqui March 20, 2013 at 7:22 pm

Love the chalkboard elements, especially the plate labels. Also love the bunting!

  265. LaShanda Taylor March 20, 2013 at 7:44 pm

I am a big fan of the chalkboard elements. They are such a nice touch and can be reused over and over again. Plus, changing chalk color makes it a versatile look.

  266. Dayl Minch March 20, 2013 at 8:09 pm

Using empty wine bottles and black and white chalk paint are not only cute but after the party you can use the bottles as mini note/bulletin boards. Reprupose and reuse is surely a was to limit waste and make use of something you would have normally tossed to away (hopefully into a recycling bin).

  267. Mandy March 20, 2013 at 8:55 pm

I love the little plant markers! I could see them being used after the party and what a green favor!

  268. suzitozer March 20, 2013 at 9:47 pm

I’m really enjoying reading your blog. May I suggest using two barrel planters to create tables. Put one empty planter upside down on the other planter and it should be just the right height for cocktail tables or to create a buffet table and will have the rustic look that is just right for this party. It’s a green idea as you can use the planters after the party to create a fabulous potted garden.

  269. Elia Badajoz March 21, 2013 at 12:54 am

Everything is fantastic! I really love the cork-frame chalkboard! You’ve done a great job, guys!

  270. Megan March 21, 2013 at 1:27 am

I absolutely love this party in its entirety! The simplicity of it combined with fabulous details is perfection. The witty signage was genius:)! LOVE!

  271. Doris March 21, 2013 at 3:19 am

Eco-friendly tip: Use reusable plates, glasses and utensils, to minimize garbage going to the landfill.

  272. Jessica Brummer March 21, 2013 at 5:47 am

I have been collecting my wine corks for a while now…but not really knowing what to do with them. These frames are so cute and could have tons of different uses! Weekend project!

  273. lara reed March 21, 2013 at 8:13 am

  279. Judy Barack March 21, 2013 at 8:15 am

I would say my favorite element would be the twine wrapped wine glasses, customizing that basic item we all have!

  280. Beth March 21, 2013 at 8:16 am

I like the use of the corks, particularly the frames. We have a lot of corks (perhaps a few too many!) and there are some great ideas here for decorating with them.

  281. Farrah Dalal March 21, 2013 at 8:16 am

I recently had a wine and cheese party and used a lot of elements like the chalkboard signs – the guests went wild over them! My favorite thing from this party has to be the creative use of wine corks to solidify the theme – I managed to collect enough from this last party to be inspired to use them in the next one just like in this party!

  282. Sarah Andrews March 21, 2013 at 8:17 am

This looks like a great party! Im not soo sure I can pick just one thing I like because it all looks spectacular! I love wine :)

  288. Marla March 21, 2013 at 8:20 am

  301. Becca Nichols March 21, 2013 at 8:24 am

  309. Maria Jaramillo March 21, 2013 at 8:27 am

By far the most fabulous things are the “temporarily” personalized chalkboard items. So many different ones. There are so many other theme parties you could use these for. Fabulous

  310. Brianna March 21, 2013 at 8:28 am

I absolutely LOVE the chalkboard food signs. I think they are a great way to carry on the theme of a party and at the same time help you guests know what each item is!

  311. Colleen Farias March 21, 2013 at 8:28 am

Love this. So many reasons why, but what really caught my eye was the cans dressed up as vases! I have said on more than one occassion that I wish I could think of more uses for them bc we seem to have a ton in our recycling bin. Going to pull some out to dress up for my son’s bday party in a few weeks!

  317. louann0525 March 21, 2013 at 8:31 am

  329. Linda Schwartz March 21, 2013 at 8:47 am

There are SO many great elements in this party!! I do love how you made a frame from the wine corks. I actually save my corks as mementos from fun events or just a good bottle of wine. I’ve been looking for something crafty to do with them & that frame around a chalkboard would be perfect!! :)

  330. Lee Hancock March 21, 2013 at 8:48 am

  333. mcdanielmaryl March 21, 2013 at 8:49 am

  334. Holly Randell March 21, 2013 at 8:50 am

LOVE the chalkboard theme!! Especially the chalkboard stickers for personalization. :)

I love the entire idea and the things you post are always something we can do!!

  350. Robyn Bruns March 21, 2013 at 9:00 am

I like how you were able to take something that is considered “ugly” (the garbage can) and make it look so cute with the chalkboard labels. Having 3 “cute” cans one for garbage, recycling, compost, makes being eco friendly look creative and fun.

  351. Seema March 21, 2013 at 9:02 am

This is such a great way to take an elegant affair and make it just a little more casual and relaxed. Great for a ladies night in, or a mid-afternoon get-together. Love it!

  366. Chrissy Harp March 21, 2013 at 9:22 am

My favorite element of this party is the use of the chalk/chalkboard. It creates a perfect fit for wine/cheese (usually slate is common for cheese display, so chalkboard is a nice compromise) and it’s something you can use for other parties in the future. Recycle/reuse!!!

  367. Dawn March 21, 2013 at 9:24 am

  380. Carie whitebirch March 21, 2013 at 9:54 am

Love the teal, white, black combo! Tip: we try to use natural serving bowls-watermelon for fruit salad, Parmesan cheese bowls for salads, etc!

  381. Crystal Alves-Tusim March 21, 2013 at 9:58 am

honestly brilliant! This is definitely an excuse to get a sitter and bring over the ladies…wohoo! I like to swap paper napkins for bright bandanas or similar sized scarves from the dollar store. They’re reusable and add instant flair to your table. Plus, they double as favors or goodie bags: Your guests can add it to their wardrobe and/or use them to wrap up cookies and other treats to take home =)

  382. Tracy P March 21, 2013 at 9:58 am

I’ve been wanting to plan a ladies get together and this idea is perfect! I love the slate serving trays and the silver cheese knives & spreaders

Too sweet! The best part about it, is that it doesn’t even look like you’re trying to minimize waste. It simply looks like a beautifully set spread that *just happens* to be made of recycled items. Good work!

  439. Gina K March 21, 2013 at 4:11 pm

I am definitely going to re-use the wine bottles, cans and pottery for my next tasting party. I plan on taking creative license and use beer bottles for signage and vases as well. This post has made me aware of the Glad’s One Bag Party initiative. I hadn’t heard about it before. Thank you!

  440. Athena K. March 21, 2013 at 4:12 pm

My Ecofriendly party tip… Use small mason jars for serving cold beverages. After the party they are reusable for another party, canning, togo meals & much more.

  441. Kristi Peterson March 21, 2013 at 4:42 pm

I love the wine cork picture frames! Truthfully, I love everything about this party!

  442. Gina Shumsky March 21, 2013 at 5:24 pm

My fiance and I are actually hosting our own engagement wine and cheese party in mid May. Wine and cheese is one of our favorite things so what better way than to bring it into a party. Our wedding is going to be a rustic/vintage theme so this fits right in. I absolutely LOVE everything you did with this look. I do love the “you had me at merlot” saying. That is too cute. Thanks for all the tips and will keep my fingers crossed on being a winner :)

  443. Sarah Sebald March 21, 2013 at 6:29 pm

  448. brittanybie@gmail.com March 21, 2013 at 7:20 pm

I love all the uses for the chalkboard paint, but my most favorite is the wine bottles painted to match the party theme. What a fun way to add color on a budget, and recycle too!

  449. Jo March 21, 2013 at 8:12 pm

I love the chalkboard signs – especially “oh look, it’s wine o’clock. How convenient for us”

  450. Kim March 21, 2013 at 9:20 pm

Whenever I host a get together, I veer toward plastic & paper products. I’d rather use glass & maybe the environmental friendly aspect can help push me to use my beautiful glassware. This wine party looks so amazing.. The twine really pulls together the rustic theme. Love it!

  451. Lynn N. March 21, 2013 at 9:47 pm

Oh my gosh, this is amazing! I love the personalized plates with chalkboard stickers! So cute.

  452. Amanda March 21, 2013 at 10:09 pm

Those slate trays are amazing and I love that you used old bottles for decor. I have a collection of bottles and cans myself that I keep on hand for parties, they are easily available, Eco friendly and so versatile!

  453. kimberley paterson March 22, 2013 at 1:19 am

This all would go just lovely with my home made plumbrillo (plum jelly) made from our very own plum tree’s. Yummy. P.S stealing the cork picture frame idea, love it.

  454. Shabonne March 22, 2013 at 3:06 am

I love, love, love this party! My friends always make me feel I am the crazy one when I am separating the recycleables or by eco-friendly products. I try to do my part because I care about where I live and how long it will be here when I am gone. Seeing your party showed them that you can have fun while participating in saving the environment. Thanks HWTM!

  455. Helene DeVita March 22, 2013 at 6:24 am

We always save our wine corks rather toss them, they make for great craft projects. But I do love the idea of painting the empty wine bottles and using them as a vase.

  456. Valerie Theberge March 22, 2013 at 9:25 am

I love the good food and wine! :)

  458. Jenny Hammer March 22, 2013 at 11:05 am

The wine bar!! And a great eco-friendly tip from me would be to make sure you compost and recycle!

  459. Elizabeth Mesa March 22, 2013 at 11:37 am

Love love Love the chalkboard! I am planning my hubby’s 40th birthday (every man’s quincenera! lol) and am working on a wine theme. The chalkboard is great! Definitely using that and have now decided to use the blue thanks to you! I cut a slits on corks that I had collected and was planning on using them for menu cards and place settings.. just an Eco friendly idea to go along with the theme!

  460. Amanda C March 22, 2013 at 2:05 pm

My eco-friendly tip is that I have (over the last 2 years) collected all white plates, all clear water glasses / goblets, all white napkins, all white tablecloths and the cleanup after a party is minimal. Much less waste w/o using paper plates, paper cups, paper napkins. White goes with everything and we just decorate with actual decorations and string/ribbon/paper that gets used over and over for many different parties.

Favorite element of this bunch? love the chalkboard stickies on each plate for a person’s name. Great idea!

  461. Roxy March 22, 2013 at 5:23 pm

i love the mini chalkboard signs

  462. Scarlett March 22, 2013 at 7:03 pm

  466. Nicole Foster-Pudlo October 20, 2013 at 1:25 pm

I am in LOVE with everything you did for this party. I am going to have a wine and cheese party myself, is it possible to edit the cheese labels? That way I can use them for whatever cheese I choose? Or, do you offer a blank one? That I can write my own names into after printing? Thanks!!

    • alyssa October 30, 2013 at 2:19 pm

  469. K. Gray March 18, 2015 at 6:46 pm

The wine corks are incorporated in so many ways! They tie the entire party theme together. Love it! Very classy and fun!
