PARTY DETAILS, as told by Katie

I had the unique opportunity to create this creative engagement fiesta for two of my closest friends, celebrating their engagement. The bride loves Mexican food, so in discussions with my partner in crime, we decided to take the Mexican theme and run with it.

We really wanted to wow guests so instead of a traditional invitations we worked with a stationer to create a poster size invitation that was rolled up around a mini bottle of beer salt, and mailed to each guest in a poster tube. This really set the tone for the type of event we were creating.

We used bright colors, mixed patterns, and tons and tons and tons of mustaches to turn the basement of a steak & seafood joint until our own personal fiesta! We mixed bright colored linens and made our own overlay out of old Mexican blankets {found online} by fraying the edges.

We worked with a florist to create colorful centerpieces and then our team used leftover wild flowers and placed them inside Mexican beer bottles to decorate the tables. We even cut a hole in large pinatas, placing vases inside, and had flowers coming out of the top of the pinatas.

We hung sombreros on the back of each chair and put mustaches on a stick inside all the centerpieces – encouraging guests to get creative with the decor. We used a local scrap booking stores machine to create hundreds of mustaches, hole punched them, and stuck a straw through the middle, this was decoration for our margarita station, as well as functional and fun for those drinking margaritas all evening! Guests really loved these and it made for some fantastic photos!

Around the room we placed disposable cameras with signs that said “say queso!” and encouraged guests to use the decor as accessories and capture the moments. We searched for creative margarita recipes online and came up with four we knew the bride and groom would love! We had a margarita station, self-service, and used old mason jars adorned with mustaches on a straw instead of glasses.

At a local craft store we purchased picture frames, large and small, and spray painted them bright colors to match the event. We then made some into chalkboards, using them for the bar and favor table. We turned the others into picture frames and displayed photos of the couple around the room.

At a local craft store we purchased wood cutouts, painted them with chalkboard paint, and then wrote quotes about marriage we found to perfectly describe this quirky couple! We used wicker furniture to create a lounge, and decorated it with pillows we made out of the old Mexican blankets. We used the left over pillows to decorate each of the chairs the guests sat at for the meal. In the lounge area we asked guests to jot down some “wit, wisdom, & wishes” for the soon to be husband and wife.

After the cocktail portion of the evening we surprised the couple with a mariachi band, guests enjoyed the music and danced the night away!

For the favors we used a pebeo porcelaine gel & pen {found at a local craft store} to draw mustaches on mugs. (Tutorial here) We added a “muchas gracias” tag” to thank guests for celebrating with Grant & Nicolle. We created a chalkboard sign out of a picture frame found at a local craft store and used chalkboard paint and chalk pens to write “so sorry you {mustache} but please grab a gift to remember the bash”.
