hunger games DIY mockingjay and printables

Hey, Hunger Games fans… I’ve got some fun news to share today! To quote Effie trinket, “You are in for a treat!“. ;) In honor of the DVD release of The Hunger Games this week (hooray!), we’ve teamed up with Walmart to help make your home viewing parties of the movie extra fantastic – which means lots of creative Hunger Games Party Ideas, recipes, and FREE PRINTABLES for you to use! {Download the printables here: District/Arena Inspired Printables and Capitol Dessert Table Printables.}

My goal was bring Book 1 to life in “party form” with food and decor ideas that are creative, significant to the story and approachable enough for home entertaining. From a fiery food table backdrop made of crepe paper and DIY mockingjays to “survival themed” place settings and homemade “Capitol Couture” cupcakes, I hope these ideas SPARK some inspiration for your own home celebrations too! I’ll go into the full DIY details and shopping resources for each section of the party in the individual breakout posts.

And speaking of celebrating, Walmart has partnered with Lionsgate Entertainment to turn the DVD release itself in to a special event by bringing The Hunger Games DVD to fans early through special “midnight parties” that will be hosted at 2000 stores across the country this Friday, August 17th. The parties kick off at 11pm, and a few select stores will even have special appearances by actors from the film! Get more details right here.

I’ll be co-hosting a Hunger Games Twitter Party this Thursday, August 16th at 4pm ET. Please “stop by” to chat party ideas, entertaining tips, movie trivia and more! To join the conversation, follow @Walmart and @HWTMJenn and use the hashtag #DistrictParty.

Scroll down to check out an overview of the theme. Since there are a LOT of different things to cover, I’ll be posting more details – including DIY Tutorials and links to download the free printables – in separate posts throughout the week so they’re easy to digest. You can also browse all of the images in the photo albums on hwtm.com. Here are the links: Hunger Games Part 1 (fiery food buffet & “Arena” tablescape) and Hunger Games Part 2 (Capitol Couture Dessert Table).

Here’s a sneak peek of the “Capitol inspired” dessert table, which I’ll cover in more detail separately. Would you have guessed that the gold poles are actually inexpensive curtain rods from Walmart?! ;) Everything from the food to the spray-painted flowers is homemade, except for the cake… I couldn’t resist throwing one pro element in there because I knew that Stevi from Hey there, Cupcake! would do an absolutely KILLER job on an “Effie inspired” cake due to her signature bold & artistic style, and of course she didn’t disappoint!

    The best Hunger Games decorations i have ever seen in my life. I just have one question i would like to ask, my 13th birthday is coming up in 2 weeks and I love those plates. I was wondering if you could tell me where you got those plates. The one with the girl on fire and the arena.

    Thank you so much.

    • alyssa April 15, 2013 at 3:22 pm

      Hi Katniss, Happy Birthday! The large outer “plate” is called a charger, that was purchased from Party City and painted. The clear plastic plates are also from party city, and the design in the middle is a free download party printable you can get from our post here: http://www.hwtm.com/2012/08/free-printables-the-hunger-games-party-table-buffet/. I’m so glad you like our Hunger Games Party, and I hope it inspired you to make a fantastic birthday party!

    This is amazing, I am giving my daughter a 12th birthday party next month and I will use all these great ideas. Wanted to find out where you got the gold frames?

  19. dematrix March 19, 2014 at 10:48 pm

    Thank you for your prompt response! I was also wondering what kind of paint did you use and technique to paint the charger plates. I am using mod podge for the clear plates but I would also like to find out your own technique on these. Thank you so much , these are so great, my daughter is so excited buy she will be thrilled when she sees the finished product!
