A Velveteen Rabbit Inspired Baby Shower
So… this just might be one of my favorite baby showers ever! That may have something to do with the fact that The Velveteen Rabbit was one of my favorite books as a child… (we had the audio version as well and I can literally hear it playing in my head as I’m working on this post!) – but there’s also no denying that this party is downright charming and gorgeous to look at either!
Kristeen from Kristeen LaBrot Events designed & hosted this rustic Velveteen Rabbit Baby Shower for her sister-in-law, and it’s obvious how much care & creativity went into bringing it to life – from the wonderfully unique floral arrangements displayed in birch-covered pots and vintage glassware, to the custom-sewn fabric napkins, handmade invitations, whimsical doily chandelier, and more!

PARTY DETAILS, as told by Kristeen…
“I designed/hosted this baby shower for my sister-in-law and chose The Velveteen Rabbit theme because that was her favorite book as a child. She and her husband aren’t finding out what they’re having, so we also needed something that was gender neutral.
I wanted to play up the textural elements from the book — we used rich, rustic materials such as burlap, cotton, velvets and wood. Vintage spools of thread and small jars of buttons were placed throughout the tablescapes. The floral arrangements were designed in vintage depression glass, birch wrapped vases and mason jars. The bright colors were phenomenal – they popped against all of the natural elements. Fujiko’s Flowers handmade the whimsical doily chandelier than hung over the guest of honor’s table as well as the napkins from the fabric I selected from Joann Fabric. I fell in love with the napkin’s print as soon as I saw it!
The vintage toys were provided by both Fujiko’s Flowers and myself. Some were purchased on eBay or flea markets, and others actually belonged to us.
The cake by CAKEGoodness was breathtaking – the rabbit detail was picked up from the rabbit glassware from Anthropologie. I set the cake atop a wooden box draped with velveteen fabric.
The invitations were hand-made by me. I spray-mounted thick card stock onto burlap from Joann Fabric and sewed a tiny button at the top. I also designed the menus using the Paper Bag cover weight paper from Paper Source.
The guest book was a copy of The Velveteen Rabbit. We asked guests to write a note to the baby in the book’s cover.
I loved how the grosgrain ribbons looked on the striped straws. It took a while, but I sewed tiny buttons onto each one!
My sister-in-law loves Vanilla Creme Soda, which is why Boylan’s Vintage Soda was chosen as the party favors. I soaked the original labels off and designed custom labels to replace them. This was a fun and budget friendly favor; they cost approximately $1.75 each in the end.
We played two games: The first was “Like Mommy or Daddy?” – which listed some of the baby’s traits and asked who my sister-in-law hoped the trait came from. We also played “Old Wives’ Tale Trivia.”
