geometric hot cocoa bar - colorful modern christmas

One of the questions I get asked most often regarding party styling is “where to you get your inspiration?”. The answer is literally from any & everywhere – but there’s usually one specific item that really grabs me and makes me want to design a party around it…. it could be a great dress, a beautiful book, even a song.

And in this particular case – where I was asked to highlight something from one of Target’s current holiday collections that inspired me – it was these particular geometric print mugs. The delicious colors, the fabulously mod pattern… definitely worthy of inspiring a celebration, don’tcha think? :) So I picked up a couple sets of the mugs and a few matching items at Target last night, and was on my merry way.

Here’s a peek at a few of the diy projects they inspired this morning, which are now going to make an upcoming night of Christmas prep with a few close friends just all the more merry & BRIGHT!

DIY Geometric Party Garland – Helpful Tips:

  • Unless your garlands are lying flat on a table or wall, you’ll need to make them double sided since they spin when they hang, so plan accordingly.
  • I used silver thread to make the geometric diamond garland shown here, but am planning to switch to clear fishing wire for the rest of them because a little bit of the silver does show through here and there on my test garland.

DIY Geometric Party Tray:

I’m super happy with how the geometric tray turned out… and even happier that it was so quick & easy! You could really go crazy with the pattern on the bottom of the tray, but since it will be covered with cocoa mugs I figured simple was best here and opted for 4 wide stripes.

DIY Geometric Stir Sticks:

These are very straight forward, but I figure a quick pictorial never hurts. :) I love the color blocked two-tone look here. This would look great with a mix of shapes too… squares, circles, triangles, etc.
