DIY Tutorial for a modern glam wine-splattered napkins

When Vanessa sent over her recent Modern Glam Thanksgiving Dinner Table, styled for CUCINA Enoteca, one of the first things that jumped out at me were these beautiful, “wine-splattered” napkins. They added such a fun pop of color to the table… and you can never have too much wine on the table, right? ;)

Vanessa was kind enough to share a step-by-step tutorial on how to make these at home, just in time to make a splash at your own Thanksgiving dinner!

DIY WINE-SPLATTERED NAPKINS

by Alchemy Fine Events

Materials

  • cotton canvas fabric
  • rit dye in red and purple
  • scissors
  • paint brushes
  • wine glass
  • fork and spoon
  • drying rack

Step by Step Instructions

1. Start by cutting out your napkins into your desired size. We went with 18″ x 18″ because we love how a larger napkin allows you to appreciate the details we’re creating.

2. Mix your dye. Follow the instructions on the back of the box and boil salted water on the stove, add the entire box of red dye and mix in half of the purple. Then, separate a few cups of this blend and add the remainder of the purple for a second, darker hue.

3. Lightly spray down your sink (or a bucket) with water for a bit of wetness but not too much. We wanted the fabric to have a few scattered we spots to help the dye bleed more. If the fabric is too wet, all of the colors will bleed together too quickly and you will lose the details.

step one of the DIY wine-splattered napkins is to spoon large blobs of the red and purple dyes onto the napkins, using a paintbrush

4. Spoon on large, messy splatters of the redder dye in various spots, playing with pap latter techniques by using a fork and paint brush.

Step two of the wine-splattered napkins DIY tutorial is to dip the bottom of a wine glass into the dye and stamp onto the napkins to create wine rings

5. For the authentic wine rings, dip the bottom of a wine glass into the darker, purple dye and stamp it onto the napkins to create rings. Use the paint brush to help trace around the base of the glass to make the rings stronger. Play with both colors of dye to get your desired look.

6. Leave to dry on a drying rack and then carefully wash per instructions. Using salt for your first wash will help the permanence and fading. We wanted a rough edge on these napkins, but you can sew the edges for a more finished look.

7. Enjoy the napkins over a deliciously prepared Thanksgiving (or any other) dinner!
