Whimsical Dr. Seuss First Birthday Party {Oh What Fun!}
I’m so excited to be sharing with you this colorful and whimsical Dr. Seuss themed First Birthday party, brought to you by the super talented Laura of Events In The City! (You may remember Laura’s incredible Cirque du Bebe Baby Shower). I remember drooling over that baby shower and wishing I could have another baby, just so I could throw a huge baby shower too! Well… guess who’s having their very own baby shower this weekend? Yep. It’s me, Jessica Wilcox of Modern Moments Designs!).
Some of my favorite details from this Seuss birthday party include the teal polka dot gable boxes with hat and fish tags, wall of Cat in the Hat hats, creative food perfect for little ones, and Thing One and Thing Two cupcake toppers… just to name a few. Laura’s right, this party is fit for a king… or a cat that is. ;)
PARTY DETAILS, as told by Laura…
“Having my little boy turn one with just any old birthday party just wasn’t an option. Owning an event design company, I knew we’d pick something he loved and just blow it up into a party fit for a king….or a cat that is!
My husband joked that I didn’t need to do all of this since he won’t remember it. But I will remember it, and the hours of labor and love putting this very special event together for my little Ethan will always be in my heart.
Just like any event I start small and then grow from there. We took all of this favorite books from Dr. Seuss and turned them into activities, fun kid food, or props. I scoured the Internet for ideas and luckily had a few brilliant ones of my own.
We covered up the door and the window in our basement with a fabric ribbon wall. This was a great wall to add texture and for barely any expense. The food was all kid friendly options just renamed or styled to have the parents chuckling to themselves. I lucked out with Michaels Craft Store having a Cat In The Hat section this past winter which I cleaned out for the games, decor, and gift bag contents. I assume most of those things are meant to be for teachers but I think they served our party well too. For future kids parties I am definitely going to keep teacher supplies and classroom decor in mind, as it was cheap and creative. Etsy, as always, cured my need for just the right details and I found no lack of Suess-like options on the site. I saved money on a crazy expensive designer cake and cupcakes by speaking to the bakery at Wegmans instead. Then I ordered fondant characters on Etsy and using printables to dress up the cupcakes.
I even surprised my best friend Tyler, who is due in July with a boy herself, with a romper for her baby. We plan on having Ethan and soon-to-arrive Colin as Thing One and Thing Two for Halloween this year. Hopefully Etsy will save the day again when it comes time for blue fluffy wigs too!
We had “Horton Hears a Who” playing the background which was not only eye candy but served as a great timer for the two hour party. We hosted family, friends, and industry coworkers along with nine kids that all had a blast. I am so proud Ethan’s first birthday turned out so well and it truly means even more that it’s featured on HWTM, just as his baby shower was just over a year ago. My how time flies!”
