Farm 1st Birthday Cake Tutorial
Celebrate your little farmer’s birthday with a homemade farm-themed cake!
Party guests will love digging into this sweet, hay-bale-topped “barn”, and YOU’LL love how easy it is to make. 😉🎉
I used ready-made ingredients to keep things SUPER easy to replicate, including crushed graham crackers for “dirt”, a graham cracker “barn door”, and a small pound cake as the foundation for the “hay bale”.
Little People farm figurines double as cute cake toppers + gifts for the birthday boy or girl!
Farm Birthday Party Cake
***
You’ll Need:
- 8” round cake that’s at least 6 inches tall & frosted red*
- 1 store-bought pound cake (from the frozen section)
- yellow frosting
- white frosting
- graham crackers – 2 whole sheets
- graham crackers, 8 sheets finely crushed
- zip-top sandwich bag
*I recommend buying pre-colored red frosting if you’re making your own cake! It’s extremely hard to turn white frosting a bright red, even with icing gel.
Instructions:
***
For the Hay Bale:
- Open the pound cake and trim it slightly to about 6” wide.
- Using yellow frosting and a zip-top bag with the corner snipped off, pipe streaks of yellow “hay” onto the pound cake.
- Refrigerate for 30 mins.
For the Barn Doors:
- Scoop some white frosting into a zip-top sandwich bag, and use it to pipe “barn door” patterns onto two graham cracker sheets.
- Refrigerate for 15 mins.
Cake Assembly:
- Set the frosted “hay bale” on top of the main red cake.
- Use a little bit of extra frosting to adhere the graham cracker “barn doors” to the front and back of the main cake.
- Sprinkle crushed graham crackers all around the hay bale and also around the base of the main cake.
- For the finishing touch, insert a wooden “1” into the top of the cake and accent it with a few cute farm animals. I used figurines from the Little People Caring for Animals Farm toy set here.
