PARTY DETAILS, as told by Kelley…
Theme:
The theme was easy. My son is OBSESSED with firefighters. He pretends to be a firefighter every day, he has tons of books with a firefighter/ fire truck theme, our apartment is filled with fire trucks, and we often visit the fire station in our neighborhood. Last year was Elmo…Elmo..Elmo. This year, is firefighters!!! The invitation read: Sound the Alarm! Chase is Turning 3. Join us at the Fire Hydrant and Cool Off with a Splish Splash Party.
Venue:
The challenge in hosting a birthday party in NYC is the venue. Since most people don’t have backyards in Manhattan, you are restricted to party venues. Luckily, there is an activity center near our apartment that has a rooftop party space. Perfect for the hot summer days in Manhattan.
Diy Decor & Objectives:
- I wanted a fun and stylish decor, but also age appropriate. The top priority was that the kids have fun!
- I also wanted the party decor to feel somewhat homemade.
- I believe the devil is in the details.
- I started to plan the party by creating a Pinterest board.
I love planning and organizing events. In fact, much of my career has focused on producing high-end events for luxury brands. However, I wanted my son’s party to have more of a personal touch. For starers, I didn’t want to spend a fortune on a cake. (Themed cakes can run between $400-$500 in NYC). Instead, I purchased a classic white cake with buttercream frosting from a neighborhood bakery. I had the bakery tint the frosting bright yellow and then I purchased the red fondant fire engines from Etsy. I placed the fondant on the cake just before the guests arrived to the party. I also made the red velvet cupcakes with a good old fashion Betty Crocker mix and placed fondant fire truck on top. To spruce up the white walls in the party room, I used red and yellow construction paper to make flames that I taped to the walls of the room.
