Theme

How “tweet” it is to turn one! The inspiration came when Vivian’s (or Vivi to her family) mom came across a Pottery Barn Kids bedding collection with cute little bird images she found adorable and thought a bird theme might be fun for Vivi’s upcoming first birthday. The concept was made official after selecting the venue and noticing the walls of the room had a sky motif – it was meant to be and it was time to look forward to Vivi’s first “bird-day” party!

Decor

With the event being held at the historic and iconic Beverly Hills Hotel, we wanted to keep things classy, but still whimsical and playful in honor of our tiny guest of honor.

Guests were asked to sign in at the gift table, which displayed a large white manzanita tree. Encouraged to write personal messages on die-cut birds, the messages were hung on the tree along with clear glass globes filled with pictures of Vivi. Seat escort cards were playfully displayed on boxes of wheat grass trimmed with pink and blue polka dotted ribbon and personal pics of Vivi also lined the back of the card table.

Based on the thought that many people have bird phobias, we decided to use elements that suggested our bird theme versus focusing the décor solely on them. J Bird cages in soft shades of pink, blue, and cream filled with wheat grass and assorted gerbera daisies highlighted our tables. Accented by white French tulips and painted bird houses, a few unassuming bird figurines also added to our table décor. Incorporating a mix of long banquet and round tables, custom made sky blue polka dot runners ran down the center of our banquet tables to complete the look.

Celebrating their Korean heritage, a traditional main table, called the dol sahng, was set up in the front of the room. With a sky blue fabric backdrop, pink ribbons accented with gerbera daisies and bird cut outs were draped down the front in varying lengths. The table itself featured cultural elements, including rice cakes and Korean birthday towers and the birthday cake also took center stage at the dol sahng. Framed by tall arrangements of gerbera daisies and hydrangea, Sunny from Filigree Cakes designed our cake to perfectly complement our cute bird theme!

For the sweets table, along with more bird cage and bird house props, we found ceramic soap trays with little birds that were perfect for displaying our cake pops and miniature bird baths that became a home for a macarons!

Food & Drinks

The wonderful service team at the Beverly Hills Hotel welcomed our guests with glasses of pink lemonade, and afterwards they sat down to enjoy an amazing three-course luncheon. Not to be outdone, the kids were treated to an elaborate buffet of all the classic kiddy favorites and many adults used their kids as excuses to sneak over and grab some extra helpings of mac n cheese and mozzarella sticks… after a full meal of lobster bisque and Chilean sea bass! As if an 8’ table filled with an assortment of desserts, PLUS birthday cake and Korean rice cakes weren’t enough sweets, mini ice-cream sandwiches were tray-passed after lunch… and who could say NO to ice cream!

Entertainment

Being a first birthday also recognizing Vivi’s Korean heritage, one of the activities on the event agenda was the doljabi. For this, a number of items are set before the baby and the one they grab indicates their potential future profession or path. Earlier in the day, guests were asked to put a raffle ticket into the container representing the item they thought Vivi would pick. For those who guessed correctly, one raffle ticket was selected as the winner.

Prizes didn’t stop with just one activity though!… Bulk Costco items disguised under wrapping paper were awarded to winners from rounds of BINGO, using personalized BINGO cards with images of Vivi on them. And an entire table also received prizes for collectively drawing the best portrait of Vivi, judged by Vivi’s parents. And guests were challenged with random quiz questions based on the “Vivi’s fun facts” sheet that was distributed to guests when they arrived. Who doesn’t love a 36-pack bundle of toilet paper?!

A photo area was set up for friends and family to pose together with quirky props and party #2 was going on at the kids craft tables where they were decorating bird house and bird shaped cookies (and eating them too!) and personalizing their canvas tote bags to take home all their treats.
