"mod mom" baby shower

Quick Jump To » Comments

Tired of the same old baby shower “looks” and ready-made party supplies? Then it’s time to shake things up a bit and add a modern twist to your upcoming event by mixing just 1 or 2 actual “baby shower” items with some hip “anytime” party goods!

Here’s an example:

For this “Mod Mom” theme, you can take just the plates from the “Mod Mom Baby Shower” paper collection and build a funky modern shower theme around them, using unexpected elements like these bold black and white polka dot luncheon napkins, pink and white hanging paper lanterns, pink and white table runners on top of solid black table cloths (yes, you CAN use black tablecloths at a baby shower!), pink dots place cards, and this funky mod “blackberry” gift wrap from Luxe Paperie, which can be used as a cool surface to set beneath flower arrangements, shower favors, or desserts.

Speaking of shower favors, these black takeout containers would make a great favor wrap for this shower. Embellish them with a thick band of pink ribbon wraped around the center of the container and topped of with a sticker, like these sage circle stickers from Paper Source (which are a perfect spot to put baby’s first initial!)

I went with a theme like this for the last baby shower I planned in October 05. I found napkins with the same image on them as the plate you’ve shown, and instead of using plates to match (I thought it would be a bit cheesy to have matching plates and nakins) I went with an assortment of pink and green plates, balloons, and found great fabric with those colors to put on the gift table. On the wall, I took baby/toddler photos of the couple, turned them all into b/w images, and blew them up. Around the images, I created decorative borders out of handcut flowers I made. The tables all had crisp white linens and the centerpieces were ceramic baby booties, some rocking horses, others teddy bears, all in white with pink/green/silver/white balloons tied to them. Fresh flowers were the centerpiece on the gift table. We had a buffet style luncheon, 95 people attended, jack -n-jill. it was a great time.

My friend is very fashionable, having been in the beauty/fashion industry for many years. Being 40 and having her first child, she definitely qualified as MOD MOM! :)

    GREAT post!

I love this idea – my best friend is expecting and I really want to do a black and white shower…one ? though – where can I find that table runner???

    Hi Erin –
The “table runner” is actually just an idea I created digitally – but you can make a DIY version of this look by using a pink runner lined with white ribbon on a black tablecloth. If you can’t find a pink runner, you can create your own using pink fabric or solid pink gift wrap, then “trimming” the edges with fabric ribbon.

Here are a couple other posts that might be helpful to your theme as well:
