PARTY DETAILS, as told by Ana

Theme & Diy Decor

For our little girl’s first birthday, we decided to transform our backyard into a Cupcake Shoppe themed partyland that was just as sweet as she is! The colors were vibrant fuchsia and purple with a pop of red. Almost everything was homemade, from the buffet, to the birthday cake (my first attempt frosting a cake that turned out great), to the pendant banner over the cupcake, to the cupcake toppers, to the buffet signs (which I hand-made using printables from Big Day Invitations)!

The backdrop of the dessert table was also made by my husband and I. He assembled a PVC pipe frame, while I sewed on the fabric awning. Aunt Donna and I assembled the cupcake liner DIY pompom centerpieces (tutorial here) to look like large cupcakes and propped them on top of spray painted tall candlesticks to add height. We also made the most adorable cupcake sidewalk chalk party favors (tutorial here) that looked so real, some guests thought they were candy!

Kid’s Table & Activities

We had a kids table (complete with a plastic table cloth to keep the gorgeous linen from A-1 Event Rentals from being damaged) where the kids could decorate their own Bakery Chef’s hats with paint, markers and foam stickers. The next activity was decorating cupcakes, of course! I pre-baked cupcakes for the kids to pipe frosting on and instructed them how to make the perfect rose swirl, which I learned from I am Baker’s tutorial, to match the birthday cake design! Then the kids added a variety of sprinkles from mason jars to their heart’s content.

Menu

  • We had delicious catering from TPC Valencia‘s Executive Chef, Daniel Otto, and Chef Dustin Boole! They created a delicious summery menu for us, including a fresh shrimp and scallop ceviche appetizer, corn on the cob, lemon and herb chicken, red oven roasted potatoes, a spring salad station (that included toppings such as grapes, Asian pears, and candied pecans with champagne vinaigrette).
  • We also had a more kid-friendly choice, but also adult pleasing, Macaroni and Cheese! Our daughter loves all the items on our menu, which is why we picked them.
  • The dessert table was filled to the brim with home-made treats (lovingly baked by Aunt Donna, Aunt Shanil, Aunt Karen, Grandma Lepe and I, plus cupcakes from Susie Cakes Bakery contributed by The Shin family) that the kids and adults could all enjoy.

It truly was a decadent sweet shoppe and a first birthday party our daughter, friends, and family will not soon forget! The best part, our daughter saying, “Wow” when she first saw all the decorations (priceless)! We are so thankful for our wonderful family and friends who made this day so memorable and amazing for us and our little cupcake, Naomi! (Special thanks to Aunt Donna for staying up and working tirelessly with me to get all these detailed projects done. You are a craft and cupcake warrior!)
