“I know it is wet and the sun is not sunny, but we can have lots of good fun that is funny.” Clair Griffiths of Calamity Cakes styled this classically popular Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat First Birthday Party for her nephew’s big day. I absolutely love the drawn look of the cookies & the (AMAZING) cake — totally transports you into Dr. Suess’ world! With SO much creative inspiration that can be taken from Dr. Seuss, Clair did an amazing job bringing his characters to life!

PARTY HIGHLIGHTS to look out for:

  • Red fish topped blue jello ‘fish bowls’ & individual red strawberry jello pots
  • Cat in the Hat & Thing 1 and 2 topped cupcakes + cartoon style smash cake
  • Dr. Seuss multi-tiered cake with the Cat’s Hat base & 3-D details from the book on top (like the fishbowl & kites)

PARTY DETAILS as told by Clair

This party was created for my sweet nephew Tyler’s first birthday. The party was themed around the fabulous ‘Cat in the Hat’ classic children’s book, using images and colours from the story.

Guests dined on savory snacks before indulging in the treats offered on the dessert table including vanilla cupcakes, jelly, sugar cookies, macarons and lots of brightly coloured candy. The table centre piece was a three tier mud cake styled with 3D images based on the book including the hat, toppling cake, fish bowl, tea cup, and Thing One and Thing twos kites. A small cake just for Tyler was also included. A drinks station was themed in the same style.

Cat in the hat bunting, polka dot lanterns and balloons were displayed around the tent in in the garden. Paperie included dessert tags, straw labels and favour labels. Signs were also posted around the party.

Children and adults alike enjoyed painting Cat in the Hat images and playing in a brightly coloured jumping castle.

Wow wow wow. I love how colorful this is and how it brings the book to life. So fun for a little boy’s first birthday. I really like how it takes different aspects and excerpts from the book and incorporates them into the party, like the painting station.
