PARTY DETAILS, as told by Amy

My daughter Aurora turned two in March 2012. For her 2nd birthday, I planned a backyard party with a RAINBOW of PINWHEELS theme. The idea came to me by combining the themes of March winds with St. Patrick’s Day gold at the end of the rainbow.

Her daycare friends and family were invited to “SPIN ON BY” her pinwheel party. On the day of the party the weather was overcast and slightly windy (unseasonable for Las Vegas) providing a great backdrop for such bright and beautiful colors – the pinwheels that lined the path to the back yard twirled and whirled setting the stage for fun!

As a working mom who seems to always be short on time, I tend to buy a lot of crafts and supplies on Etsy.com. I truly enjoy baking so I that is where I choose to spend most of my preparation time… on the cakes, cupcakes, and other decorative desserts!!!

Craft tables were set up so small guests could decorate a party hat and make a pinwheel to take home. A variety of materials were available to use: feathers, pom-poms, stickers, foam letters and markers.

Guests were offered a variety of sandwiches, fruit, vegetables and chips to eat. Drink choices were pink lemonade, milk, and water. A rainbow of colors of paper plates and cups were available… but I didn’t forget about the little ones! Sippy cups in a rainbow of colors were available too!

A face painter/balloon artist arrived after lunch to keep the action going, adding more bright and beautiful excitement to the day.

All in all, time flew by and we all agreed the colorful day was well suited for the little girl who brightens our day, each and every day of the year!

Diy Dessert

  • Dipped Oreos: Oreo cookies were lowered into melted white chocolate with a fork then covered with sprinkles before thoroughly dry.
  • Sugared marshmallow pops: using popsicle sticks, marshmallows were also dipped in white chocolate, then rolled in colored baking sugar and stood up vertically to dry.
  • Confetti Cakes: the two different styles of cupcakes and the birthday cake were made using a white wedding cupcake recipe from RecipeGirl.com using a Funfetti cake mix adaptation. I added extra jimmies in the cake mix just for kicks! My buttercream frosting includes cream cheese, which nicely complemented the almond flavoring in the cake recipe. The brightly colored sprinkles and sugars were purchased at sweetestelle.

I picked Skittles, Gumballs, and Jubilee Mix for the candy choices. I even added different types Skittles to the original Skittles mix to ensure that all of 7 the bright rainbow colors I chose were represented (red, pink, purple, blue, green, yellow, and orange.)
