THEME

When I volunteered to host a baby shower for my sister-in-law, Rainey, I wanted to find a theme that could match her bright and fun spirit. HWTM’s Retro Rainbow Baby Shower was the perfect inspiration. (Gold baby rollerskates? Seriously, how could I resist?) I would love to claim that I thought of the party details myself, but most of them are from HWTM. By using the printables offered on the HWTM Etsy Shop, following the directions on the ‘how-to’ posting for this theme, and a little DIY finagling, I was able to throw a pretty rad celebration for the expecting couple.

DECOR + CRAFTING

First, I printed the various theme pages and placed them in white bargain frames from Michael’s. (The colors are much more vibrant on photo paper rather than cardstock.) I bought heart shaped chipboard that I covered in glue and glitter, ric-rac, ribbon, sequined elastic, and buttons in gold and primary colors; and then I went to town decorating the frames. Glue dots used for scrapbooking were helpful for adhering these items, as I could remove them later and reuse the frames in the future. For the coffee table centerpiece, I spray-painted a small vase from IKEA gold and found another, larger vase at Michael’s. Using wooden dowels, I hot glued the ‘cloud’ batting and strung button ‘raindrops’ from fishing line. Inside the vases, I placed Styrofoam used for flower arranging to hold the dowels in place. I also spray painted plastic pacifiers from Michael’s gold before rolling these in glue and glitter. I placed these in various locations.

DESSERT TABLE

For the dessert table, I used two yards of chevron fabric I found at Hobby Lobby as a table cloth. The sunburst mirror was an item I already had in my home, a Home Goods find that I previously spray painted in Krylon “bronze.” The rainbow lollies were a last minute find at Michael’s. The lemon drops and orange slice candy were from Target. I made the cupcakes myself, experimenting with homemade frosting and icing bags I found at Hobby Lobby, and topped them HWTM printables. The BABY letters were also a HL find, which I spray painted gold, let dry, and then painted again in primary colors. (If you’re not crafty like me, you may need to know that tempera paint will not work. Acrylics are needed to cover spray paint, as I learned the hard way.)

DRINK STATION

At the drink station we served water and sangria. The dispensers were originally decorated with ribbon and labels; however, the condensation from the cold drinks caused them to slide off. The cute straws are from Target’s Spritz collection. (Who knew?)

DIAPER CAKE

The most popular and my personal favorite element of the shower was the diaper cake. I spray painted canvas baby shoes and round wooden dowels from Hobby Lobby, decorated them with buttons and sequence, and placed them on top of the ‘cake.’ Guests received Skittle filled baby bottles, whose lids I spray painted gold and rolled in glitter. (Don’t use Gorilla Glue; apparently it foams when it dries.)

ONESIE STATION

Lastly, I set up a Onesie Station were guests could iron on cute appliques to various sized white-onesies. The completed onesies were then hung with clothes pins for display.

With the help HWTM and some trial and error, even someone like me who lacks that Martha Stewart je ne sais quoi can pull off a rather successful shindig.
