“Sunny day, sweepin’ the clouds away, on my way to where the air is sweet…” and speaking of sweet, check out this adorable Elmo themed party that Michelle from I DO invitations by Michelle designed for her daughter’s 2nd birthday!

This party is a fantastic example of a character theme done right… there’s definitely a big Elmo and Sesame Street presence, but Michelle put her own unique twist on the theme by incorporating modern patterns and stylish party elements – like cake pops displayed in flower pots and a fabulous table backdrop fashioned from honeycomb paper daisies and a custom birthday banner!

PARTY DETAILS, as told by Michelle…

“I’m not big on character themed parties, but since my daughter is in love with Elmo, I knew it just had to be the theme this year. I tried to modernize it with polka dots and vibrant colors so it wasn’t solely based on elmo but we still showed him some lovin’. I just love the combination of red, orange, yellow and pink – makes me happy just looking at those colors together!

Cami’s adorable tee came from the fabulous *golden*! It was even more perfect than I imagined. My husband and I even coordinated our outfits in her party colors. 

I styled a sweets table with cookies from  The Cookie Jar, chocolate covered oreos from Sweeties by Kim , Cake Pops and Cupcakes by Lillycakes, and the delicious tiered cake from Sweet & Sassy Desserts — each layer was a different flavor filling — strawberry, raspberry and fudge! Oh my!

I dipped jumbo marshmellows in frosting and added sprinkles in the party colors and also poured goldfish crackers in little red polka dot cups from Shop Sweet Lulu. You know, Elmo doesn’t go anywhere without his friend, Dorothy the Goldfish. The DIY cupcake towers my husband and I made by simply spray painting silver trays and candlestick holders from a dollar store. I found the amazing tutorial on Joy’s Hope and couldn’t wait to try it! It was so fun and easy to do! The most expensive part was the spray paint but I got it on sale at Michael’s.

Another DIY project was the ‘Cami Street’ street sign. I showed my husband something I found online that I wanted to buy and he said he would make something better for me, and he did! It was perfect! Now that the party is over, it’s going in her room and I’ll set her little Sesame Street characters around the bottom. Honestly, I start planning and looking for decor and ideas about 6 months before the party. Hobby Lobby and Target and Michael’s dollar aisles are my new best friends! The Target dollar section totally rocked when it came to the goodie bags as they had a section of all Sesame Street stuff — books, pads of paper, crayons, and even mini boxes of goldfish! Oh Target, how I love you!

Also, how perfect were the red and orange polka dot plates that are shown on the dessert table? A few weeks before the party, I was walking thru Target and literally walked past the aisle and immediately turned around as I spotted these! I think I even said out loud, “OMG, are you kidding me!?” when I saw them. PERFECT! (I got the napkins too!) It’s not everyday you see red and orange polka dots so I was super excited about this find! I just love the tissue daisies I purchased from Shop Sweet Lulu and Polka Dot Market . I bought assorted paper lanterns from Hobby Lobby and placed them all around the tops of the kitchen cabinets and entertainment center to keep with the color scheme.

One thing we forgot to get a picture of was the kids coloring station that I had setup in the basement. I designed a coloring sheet for each child that said ‘Elmo loves Rylan’, for example. The kids had fun with it, but really, they probably only colored for about 4 minutes before they were on to something. else

 Since there was such a big sweets table, I kept it simple for the food. We ordered pizza’s and had a fruit salad and veggie tray. I designed the water bottle labels and even the choices of pop had to be coordinating! (Coke (red), Pink Lemonade (pink), Sunkist (orange) and Squirt (yellow).”
